June 2006 (Week 5) |
Michelle and Cooper took a cruise on the DeSmet on Lake McDonald

We were hoping that the Going to the Sun Road would open on our
last day at Glacier. The road was scheduled to fully open on June 16. Unfortunately,
heavy rains delayed the opening. Therefore, we drove around the southern
boundary of the park and then went up to Logan Pass from the east side.
Our first stop of the day was at Glacier Park Lodge in East Glacier.
This is one of the three railroad lodges built in or around the park.

Wild Goose Island as we start heading up the Going to the
Sun Road from the east side of the park.
This is the "Big Drift" area just before reaching Logan Pass.
This vertical cut was 40 to 50 feet high. Lots of warning signs
not to stop near the snow.
Nearing the parking lot at Logan Pass.
The snow was higher than our van.
Logan Pass visitor center. While we were standing here the
visitor center opened for the season.
Heading back down and out of the park

Our final stop heading out of the park was at the St. Mary visitor center. Cooper was sworn
in as a Junior Ranger. He was a little nervous because he feared he would have to wear a
ranger hat (he thinks they look funny). After we told him he did not need to and he would get
a ranger badge he warmed up to the idea. This is Cooper taking his oath. He then received his
badge and his own business card. He was excited.
