Day 21: Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius
We took a day trip to Pompeii today. After seeing ruins all over Italy, Greece, and Turkey we have started to appreciate different levels of integrity in the ruins. For example, the Athens Acropolis appears to be rebuilt more than other ruins. Olympia was pretty ruined altogether. The Epidaurus Theater was surprisingly intact. The two-story library facade in Ephesus was surprising.
Pompeii was a different level altogether due to the volcanic event and being buried so quickly. There are nearly 2,000 year old frescos that are still colorful and pots for food at street vendors.
Mt. Vesuvius is over Sawyer's shoulder.
After visiting Pompeii we stopped for lunch before hiking to the top of Mt. Vesuvius.
