Day 11: Museum and Paperwork
The Dragon Boat Festival started today and will last Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Government offices are closed so we won't have much to do these three days. We saw dragon boat racing on the television but can't seem to find much going on locally.
Tess gives us a little more each day. Today she walked a little more. She had only been taking 3 to 4 steps before asking to be picked up again. Her skin is getting better too and she is less itchy.
The other families from our travel group arrived in Guangzhou today. It will be nice to reconnect with them for the remainder of the trip and get to see their children.
We visited a museum today right near our hotel. The museum houses the tomb of Emperor Wen who was a ruler of the Nanyue Kingdom around 100 BC. The tomb was unearthed during a construction project in the 1980's. We were able to walk in the tomb and see the artifacts that were unearthed. The woman working in the gift shop was very curious about Tess. She asked if she was Chinese. When we told her yes, she asked which province. A lot of people watched us today and some stopped on the street to watch her. The ones who speak English tell us how cute she is.
The emperor was buried in a suit (and even shoes) made of jade. The jade pieces were small and string was used to weave them together.
The museum also had a Genghis Khan exhibit and a Chinese pillows exhibit.
Tess took to the pool pretty quickly yesterday and today. The 18 month swimsuit we brought for her is way too big. The bottoms just fall off, but the top is good enough. The locals have never seen a swim diaper, so they asked about it.
Tess has big eyes and full lips. Her upper lip actually sticks out further than her nose.
